Lesson Three - SOUND - Careful listening

Listening, hearing, the ability to perceive sound, another sense we take for granted. Again, I want you to focus. Pay attention. Single out specific sounds. Search for the origins of sounds.

SSit outside, listen to the world. The wind blowing through the leaves of the trees, the crickets, the birds (the different birds), the cars, listen to everything. Record what you hear in detail; try to distinguish each and every sound. Close your eyes. What do you hear where you are right now?

Listen to people around you. Record snippets of conversations. Write them down. Try to write accents and inflections. Listen to the way people talk to each other. Notice how deep someone's voice is or how they sound on the phone. How does your family sound when they are together? large families are fun because there are so many conversations going on, and a small family is more intimate. Pay attention to how you can tell they are smiling even if you can't see them. How do you talk to others?

Listen to yourself. When you talk to others how do YOU sound? Do you speak differently depending on whom you are speaking to? We tend to speak in another tone when around our close friends and family. Notice how you speak.

Listen to the layers of sound around you. Obviously, the loudest you'll hear first such as sirens, cars, and kids running around the house. Then you'll start to notice the not-so-obvious - the softer sounds, the humming of the T.V., your breathing.

Step outside your musical box! Find and experience new types of music. Pick out the different instruments. Symphony, opera, Heavy metal, country, pop, jazz, blues, r&b, thrash, death metal, punk and on and on... (musicgenreslist.com). Listen to music in a different language; French, Italian, Spanish,...
